Recap
Jennifer Halloran, Chief Marketing Officer, Head of Marketing and Brand at MassMutual, was the featured speaker at the FCS NY Spotlight Luncheon on August 11, 2022, at the Harvard Club in New York City. In a fireside chat style conversation, she was interviewed by John McCormick, FCS Programming Chair.
Their discussion first focused on the role of economic conditions today and how inflation is impacting marketing. Jennifer said that, from a marketer’s perspective, brands needed to work harder in the face of marketing budget cuts and increased media costs. She noted that, at MassMutual, “we’re focusing on building measurement, data and analytics – using data and modeling to show how we’re doing… testing variables, optimizing, using AI and data science to follow consumers.
In discussing the 2021 relaunch of the MassMutual brand, Jennifer talked about “building on the core values of the brand at the top of the funnel. Now we are looking at big under-served markets. The biggest growth opportunity is the people we’re not reaching now.” She said that MassMutual is exploring ways to better use segmentation and technology to reach various customer groups.
With a nod to the support she receives from her agencies, Jennifer remarked that “MassMutual is always interested in hearing ideas from potential media partners – aligning their audiences and brand values with those of MassMutual, in an authentic way.” She cited recent examples of this type of effort including MassMutual’s campaigns around the 50th anniversary of Title IX, executed with CBS and The New York Times. She also highlighted its campaign with actor Billy D. Williams designed to promote financial literacy and introduce younger consumers to the role of financial advisors.
In gratitude to Jennifer for participating in our luncheon series, the FCS made a $1,000 donation to the children’s charity of her choice – JDRF – the leading global organization funding type 1 diabetes (T1D) research.
