Recap
On Thursday, July 30, the FCS closed out an exceptional month of programming with a special Cocktails with Content reception hosted by CNN Business at its Hudson Yards offices, with spectacular views of Manhattan. Lou Aversano, Head of Marketing & Social Platforms at Fidelity Investments, joined Anna Frost, Head of Marketing for CNN Worldwide, for a candid conversation on the evolving role of marketing, the impact of AI, and how financial brands can create stronger, more meaningful customer relationships.
Rather than focusing solely on campaigns or channels, Lou encouraged marketers to think of marketing as an enterprise-wide growth engine. He described the discipline as being in the midst of a renaissance, arguing that marketing’s greatest opportunity lies in connecting people, functions and capabilities across an organization to reduce customer friction and accelerate growth. The brand, he suggested, should be viewed as a strategic asset that serves the entire business—not simply the marketing department.
AI Will Make Judgment More Valuable
While acknowledging that AI currently dominates nearly every marketing conversation, Lou offered a thoughtful perspective on what comes next. As AI makes content creation, targeting and execution faster, cheaper and more accessible, he believes those capabilities will become table stakes. The real differentiator will be human judgment—the ability to make better strategic decisions, understand customers, and create lasting value. In his view, AI will elevate, rather than diminish, the importance of experienced marketers.
Financial Services Is Rich With Emotional Stories
Lou also challenged the notion that financial marketing must rely primarily on rational product messaging. Consumers, he said, aren’t buying investment products—they’re investing in a better future for themselves and their families. Whether planning for retirement, purchasing a home or funding a child’s education, financial decisions are deeply emotional, creating significant opportunities for marketers to tell stories that resonate on a human level while reinforcing the role their brands play in helping customers achieve life’s milestones.
Put The Customer Before The Product
Perhaps Lou’s most practical takeaway came when he shared his observations on how many different industries have historically organized around products rather than customer experiences. Increasingly, however, customers expect brands to deliver seamless, connected interactions across every touchpoint. By listening closely to customer feedback and removing organizational silos, marketers can create more audience-first experiences that strengthen relationships over the long term.
The FCS extends its sincere thanks to Lou Aversano and Anna Frost for an engaging and insightful discussion, and to CNN Business for graciously hosting the evening. It was a fitting reminder that financial marketing continues to evolve from a communications function into a central driver of business growth.
